Mathematics
- Our Mathematics program will operate in collaboration with the other Year 4 classes, in 'grouped' math sessions. The children will be participating in their group with other children who approach Mathematics in a similar way, and have similar understandings to them. This will enable us to focus on their particular needs, strengths and weaknesses.
- Informed by the Western Australian Curriculum, we are teaching maths with a focus on Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry, and Statistics & Probability. Number, Algebra, Measurement & Geomtery will be the main focus during the combined group sessions. Statistics & Probability will be addressed in our home class sessions.
- It is important to state that the conceptual development of Mathematical understanding is not dependent upon scores of written algorithms, these are just a written demonstration of concepts that a child understands. The most significant learning happens when a child is engaged in manipulating quantities of physical items and is able to see, touch and move items. For this reason, many of our lessons will involve children on the floor 'playing' with maths (eg. lima beans to manipulate quantities, bundles of straws to understand the value of place in the number structure, Kennex to examine 3D objects). We want the children to develop an attitude that "maths is fun", and get them thinking mathematically
